Overview

About Paragliding in Pokhara

Pokhara is widely regarded as one of the finest paragliding destinations on the planet, and for good reason. Nestled in the lap of the Annapurna Himalayan range, the Pokhara valley offers a unique combination of dramatic elevation, reliable thermal winds, and a stunning natural amphitheatre that few places on earth can match. Every year, thousands of adventure seekers take to the skies above this Nepali lakeside city, and almost all of them land with the same verdict: it was the most spectacular experience of their lives.

The standard launch site is Sarangkot hill at 1,592m (5,223 ft), a vantage point renowned in its own right for sunrise views. From here, tandem flights glide out over the Pokhara valley floor, giving passengers a bird's-eye panorama of Phewa Lake shimmering far below in turquoise blue, the dense subtropical forests of the middle hills, and the full sweep of peaks from Dhaulagiri (8,167m) in the west through Annapurna South, Annapurna I (8,091m), and Annapurna III to the iconic Machapuchare (Fishtail Peak, 6,993m) — a mountain whose summit has never been officially climbed and whose twin summits form the unmistakable fish-tail silhouette visible throughout the valley.

All tandem flights are conducted with certified, experienced pilots who have completed hundreds or thousands of flights in Pokhara's skies. Your pilot handles every technical aspect of the flight — harness setup, running take-off, wing control, and gentle landing — so you can focus entirely on the experience. Thermal conditions in Pokhara allow pilots to maintain altitude and even gain height, extending flights and enabling optional acrobatic maneuvers such as wingovers and spirals for those who want an extra rush. A GoPro camera mounted on the wing captures both stills and video throughout, giving you a professional-quality souvenir of the experience.

Experience

What to Expect

Your paragliding day begins with a hotel pickup from Lakeside, Pokhara, typically around 8:00–9:00 AM (morning thermals are best). The short drive climbs the winding road up to Sarangkot (approximately 20–30 minutes), where you will meet your pilot at the launch site. Before any flight, your pilot conducts a thorough pre-flight briefing covering harness fitting, the running take-off technique (usually just 5–10 steps forward on flat ground), body position in the air, and the gentle stand-up landing procedure back near the lakeside. No prior experience is necessary — your only job is to run forward on cue and enjoy the flight.

Take-off from Sarangkot is an exhilarating moment: within seconds of your short run, the wing lifts and you are airborne, feet dangling, with the entire valley opening up beneath you. Pilots use the strong, predictable morning thermals rising off the valley floor to maintain and gain altitude, circling lazily with the Annapurna massif filling the northern horizon. At various points your pilot may narrate landmarks below — the white dome of the World Peace Pagoda on the opposite ridge, the blue expanse of Phewa Lake, the Pokhara airport runway, and distant villages clinging to hillsides. If you choose acrobatics, your pilot will ask for consent mid-flight and demonstrate the maneuvers safely within the normal flight envelope.

Landing takes place at a designated flat field near Lakeside (Baidam), close to your starting point. The pilot sets up a gentle approach and you stand up to your feet for a soft, controlled touchdown. After landing, your pilot downloads the GoPro footage and you can transfer the photos and video to your phone on the spot. The entire outing — from hotel pickup to drop-off — takes approximately 2–3 hours in total.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Pokhara has a well-established paragliding industry regulated by the **Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN)**. All commercial tandem operators are required to use certified pilots and airworthy equipment. Tandem paragliding — where a certified pilot controls the wing and you simply enjoy the ride — has an excellent safety record worldwide. Accidents are extremely rare when you fly with a licensed operator.

None at all. Tandem paragliding requires zero experience from the passenger. Your pilot handles everything: wing inflation, the running take-off, steering throughout the flight, and landing. Your pre-flight briefing (about 10–15 minutes) covers all you need to know. The only action required of you is to run a few steps forward at take-off on your pilot's count.

Weather in Pokhara can change quickly, and pilot safety assessments are non-negotiable. If conditions are deemed unsafe, your flight will be postponed or cancelled. You will receive a **full refund** or the option to reschedule to another available date at no extra cost. We recommend booking on the earlier days of your Pokhara stay to allow flexibility for rescheduling if needed.

Yes, if you want extra excitement, ask your pilot about **acrobatic maneuvers** such as wingovers and spiral dives. Pilots will only perform these with your explicit consent and will explain what to expect before each maneuver. Acrobatics are conducted within a safe altitude band and are entirely optional — many passengers prefer a smooth, scenic glide.

Wear comfortable, close-fitting clothes, closed-toe sports shoes, and sunglasses. Bring sunscreen (SPF 30+) and a light jacket — Sarangkot can be noticeably cooler than the lakeside, especially in the early morning. Leave bulky bags at the hotel; a small pocket for your phone is sufficient as your pilot will handle the GoPro.

The **October–April** window offers the clearest conditions, with post-monsoon (Oct–Nov) and pre-monsoon (Mar–Apr) months typically delivering the most reliable visibility and spectacular views of the Annapurna range. December–February can be cold at Sarangkot but skies are often crystal clear. The monsoon season (June–September) sees heavy cloud cover that frequently grounds flights.
