Sacred pilgrimage to one of the 108 Divya Desam at 3,710m
About Muktinath Temple
Muktinath, known as Mukti Kshetra (Place of Salvation), is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in Nepal, perched at 3,710 metres in the Mustang district of the Annapurna region. The temple complex is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists, making it one of the rare shared sacred sites in the world.
For Hindus, Muktinath is one of the 108 Divya Desams (sacred Vishnu temples) and one of the eight most sacred sites (Swayam Vyakta Kshetras). The temple features the sacred eternal flame fuelled by natural gas, burning alongside water and rock — symbolizing the unity of the divine elements.
The temple complex includes 108 stone water spouts (Muktidhara) shaped like bull heads, where devotees bathe in the holy water, and the Jwala Mai temple with its eternal flame. A holy bath here is believed to grant salvation (moksha) from the cycle of rebirth.

Why Muktinath for Hindu Pilgrims
Hindu Significance
Muktinath holds deep significance in Hindu scripture and tradition. It is one of the 8 Swayam Vyakta Kshetras — places where Lord Vishnu manifested himself — and one of the 108 Divya Desams revered in Vaishnavism.
- 🔱One of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu
- 🔱108 Muktidhara — sacred water spouts that grant moksha
- 🔱The Shaligram stones (ammonite fossils) found in the Kali Gandaki River are considered manifestations of Vishnu
- 🔱Jwala Mai — the eternal flame represents the unity of Pancha Tatva (5 elements)
- 🔱Mentioned in the Skanda Purana and Vishnu Purana
- 🔱Bathing in the 108 spouts is believed to wash away all sins and ensure moksha
This pilgrimage is especially significant during Janai Purnima (August), Dashain, and Ekadashi days.
Muktinath is equally sacred to Buddhists, who know it as Chumig Gyatsa. For Tibetan Buddhists, it is one of the 24 tantric sacred sites.

Common Questions
Yes, absolutely. Our helicopter package is specifically designed for elderly pilgrims and those with mobility concerns. You fly directly to Muktinath and return the same day without any strenuous trekking. The temple area itself involves moderate walking on paved paths. We also provide oxygen support if needed at altitude.
Yes, you need an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and TIMS card. Indian nationals need a valid passport or Voter ID for the border crossing if coming from India. Don't worry — all permits are included in our tour packages and we handle the paperwork for you.
The temple darshan itself takes 2–3 hours. If you take the helicopter, you can do a same-day return to Pokhara. However, we recommend at least a 3-day package (Kathmandu–Pokhara–Muktinath–return) for a comfortable experience without rushing.
Warm layers (temperatures can drop to 0°C even in spring), comfortable walking shoes, rain jacket, sunscreen, sunglasses, personal medications, and a change of clothes for the holy bath at 108 Muktidhara. For the bath, carry a towel and light cotton clothing. We provide a detailed packing list upon booking.
Indian nationals can enter Nepal using a valid Voter ID card at land border crossings (Sonauli). However, we strongly recommend carrying a valid passport for smoother processing, especially if taking domestic flights within Nepal. A passport is mandatory for helicopter tours.
The temple is open year-round, but road conditions during monsoon (June–August) can be challenging due to landslides. Helicopter tours still operate, weather permitting. Interestingly, the Mustang region sits in a rain shadow, so it receives far less rain than the rest of Nepal — making it more accessible than you'd expect during monsoon.
Muktinath sits at 3,710 metres (12,172 ft). Mild altitude symptoms like headache or breathlessness are possible, especially if you fly directly. Our helicopter tours include acclimatization guidance, and guides carry first-aid and oxygen. For road trips, the gradual ascent naturally helps acclimatization.
Absolutely! All our packages can be customized — add extra days in Pokhara, include Pashupatinath or Lumbini, upgrade accommodation, or arrange private vehicles. Contact us with your requirements and we'll create a tailored itinerary.
