Overview

About Vehicle Rental Services

Nepal's landscapes demand the right vehicle. From the frenetic lanes of Kathmandu to the mountain passes above Muktinath and the jungle tracks of Chitwan, Debyani Tours' fleet is built to handle the full range of conditions Nepal throws at it. Our vehicles include Maruti Suzuki hatchbacks and sedans for city transfers and short sightseeing runs, Toyota Hilux and Mahindra Scorpio four-wheel drives for mountain roads and off-road excursions, rugged Tata Sumo jeeps for group travel, and a selection of Royal Enfield motorcycles and Yamaha scooters for independent travellers who want the freedom of two wheels. Every vehicle in the fleet is serviced regularly, carries valid insurance, and is inspected before each hire period.

For many travellers, the most convenient option is a chauffeur-driven vehicle with one of our experienced local drivers at the wheel. Navigating Nepal's roads — particularly outside the major cities — requires an intimate knowledge of route conditions, seasonal closures, landslide-prone sections, and local driving customs that no map application can reliably provide. Our drivers know where the road deteriorates above Jomsom, which hours to avoid the Prithvi Highway during peak traffic, and how to read the sky when mountain weather is building. They are also excellent informal guides: fluent in local culture and history, and invariably happy to share it. For those who prefer to drive themselves, self-drive hire is available in Pokhara and Kathmandu with appropriate documentation.

Debyani Tours offers vehicle rental for every kind of journey — airport pickup and drop, half-day or full-day sightseeing circuits, multi-day overland tours across Nepal, and support vehicles for trekking groups who need gear and supply transport between road-accessible points. We can arrange a single vehicle for an hour or a convoy of jeeps for a week-long expedition. Whatever the requirement, contact us to discuss the right solution.

Experience

What to Expect

Booking begins with a conversation — either through our website enquiry form or by phone. We will confirm vehicle availability for your required dates, discuss the itinerary if you have one in mind, and match you with the most suitable vehicle from the fleet. For chauffeur-driven hire, we will assign a driver whose experience matches the terrain you plan to cover: a Kathmandu Valley sightseeing driver is different from a high-altitude mountain driver, and we take that seriously. Once confirmed, your vehicle and driver (if applicable) will be at your specified pickup point on time, with the vehicle fuelled and ready.

For chauffeur-driven hires, the experience is straightforward: your driver manages everything road-related while you focus on the journey. Drivers speak functional to good English and are happy to recommend stops, local eateries, and viewpoints along the way. They carry emergency tool kits and basic first aid supplies, and have access to roadside assistance contacts throughout the country. For remote routes such as the Mustang highway or the Rara Lake approach road, we always brief drivers thoroughly on current road conditions before departure.

Self-drive customers collect the vehicle at our office in Pokhara or Kathmandu after completing a brief inspection together with our team. We will walk you through the vehicle's features, note any existing bodywork marks, and review the fuel and insurance documentation with you. Nepal drives on the left, road markings are inconsistent outside main highways, and mountain roads can be narrow with sheer drops — we strongly recommend that self-drive customers have prior experience driving in South or Southeast Asia before tackling anything beyond city or valley roads. We are happy to advise on route difficulty during the booking process.

Important Info

Things to Know

Documents Required

  • Valid passport (required for all hirers — copy retained at booking)
  • A valid driving licence from your home country is required for self-drive hire
  • An International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended for foreign nationals and may be required by police at checkpoints
  • Motorcycle and scooter self-drive requires a licence endorsement for the relevant engine class
  • Foreign driving licences alone are not recognised under Nepali law without an IDP

Road Conditions in Nepal

  • Kathmandu and Pokhara city roads are generally paved but heavily congested, with erratic traffic
  • Highways connecting major cities (Prithvi, Arniko, Mahendra) are paved but subject to landslides and roadworks
  • Mountain roads above 1,500 m are often unpaved, single-lane, and seasonally damaged by monsoon rains
  • Road closures due to landslides are common from June–September; check current conditions before departing
  • Many mountain destinations require four-wheel drive; our team will advise on the correct vehicle for your route

Driving Tips for Nepal

  • Nepal drives on the left side of the road
  • Horn usage is normal and expected — it is a communication tool on narrow mountain roads, not an expression of frustration
  • Give way to uphill traffic on narrow mountain roads; it is both courtesy and law
  • Speed limits are enforced by police checkpoints, particularly on highways
  • Night driving on mountain roads is strongly discouraged due to poor lighting and increased risk
  • Keep your passport and vehicle documents accessible at police checkpoints

Fuel & Breakdown

  • Petrol and diesel stations are widely available in cities and main highway towns
  • In remote mountain areas, carry a spare fuel jerry can — stations can be 100+ km apart
  • In the event of a breakdown, contact our 24/7 assistance line immediately
  • We maintain a network of local contacts and partner garages across major routes
  • Replacement vehicles are dispatched where feasible; repair time on remote roads can take 24–48 hours
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

An IDP is strongly recommended and may be required at police checkpoints, which are common on Nepal's highways. Your home country licence alone is generally not accepted without an IDP under Nepali traffic law. Obtain your IDP from your home country's motoring authority before travelling.

Self-drive is available for scooters, motorcycles (including Royal Enfield), and compact cars in Pokhara and Kathmandu. Jeeps and larger SUVs are available on a chauffeur-driven basis only. We recommend self-drive only for travellers with prior experience driving on South Asian roads.

Fuel for cars, jeeps, and SUVs is at the hirer's expense throughout the rental period. Motorcycle and scooter hires include the first full tank. Fuel costs in Nepal are broadly comparable to India and Thailand — your guide or driver can advise on current pump prices.

All hirers receive our 24/7 roadside assistance number at the time of pickup. In the event of a breakdown, call us immediately and we will arrange repair or a replacement vehicle. Response times vary by location — on remote mountain routes, please factor in that mechanical assistance may take several hours.

Yes — multi-day chauffeur-driven hire is one of our most popular services. Popular routes include Kathmandu to Pokhara, the Annapurna circuit road (Beni to Jomsom via Mustang highway), Pokhara to Chitwan, and the Terai highway across southern Nepal. Contact us with your route and dates for a tailored quote.

Contact Debyani Tours through our website or by phone with your required dates, pickup location, and preferred vehicle type. Pricing varies by vehicle, duration, and route and is available on request. We recommend booking at least 48 hours in advance to ensure your preferred vehicle is available.
