Adventure Jeep Ride to Upper Mustang
A 4WD Expedition into the Forbidden Kingdom of Lo Manthang
Adventure Jeep Ride to Upper Mustang
Journey into Upper Mustang, the once-forbidden Himalayan kingdom of Lo, on an unforgettable 4WD expedition to the walled city of Lo Manthang. This restricted region north of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs is a rain-shadow desert of ochre canyons, eroded cliffs, ancient cave dwellings, and centuries-old Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. The adventure follows the legendary Kali Gandaki, the world's deepest gorge, through Jomsom and the medieval village of Kagbeni, the traditional gateway to Upper Mustang, before climbing past Ghami and Charang to Lo Manthang at 3,840 metres. Here, whitewashed monasteries, royal palaces, and timeworn chortens preserve a Tibetan culture that has changed little for 600 years. Because Upper Mustang is a controlled border zone, a special restricted-area permit is mandatory and travellers must move as a registered group with a licensed guide. With Debyani Tours handling permits, logistics, and an experienced driver-guide, this Mustang jeep tour delivers raw Himalayan adventure, profound cultural depth, and landscapes found nowhere else on earth.

Summer / Monsoon
Jun - AugUnusually good for Mustang because it lies in the rain shadow and stays largely dry while the rest of Nepal is wet. A recommended off-peak option.
Autumn
Sep - NovStable weather, crisp air, and excellent visibility. Coincides with the vibrant Tiji-season culture and harvest landscapes.
Winter
Dec - FebBitterly cold and many locals migrate to lower elevations. Roads can be snow-blocked, making access unreliable.

Common Questions
Yes. Upper Mustang is a restricted region requiring a special restricted-area permit (currently around USD 500 per person for the first 10 days) in addition to an ACAP permit. You must travel with at least one other person, register as a group, and have a licensed guide. Debyani Tours arranges all of this for you.
The 4WD covers the distances, so no trekking is required, but the route is long, bumpy, and reaches 3,840m at Lo Manthang. Reasonable general fitness and tolerance for full days of mountain driving at altitude are recommended.
Lo Manthang sits at 3,840m and the route stays high for several days, so mild altitude effects are possible. We pace the ascent, advise on hydration, and our guides carry basic altitude medication.
Less than elsewhere in Nepal. Upper Mustang lies in the Himalayan rain shadow and remains largely dry through summer, making June to August a surprisingly good time to visit, though the access road through the lower gorge can occasionally be affected by rain.
Tourist-standard hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara, and clean local guesthouses in Mustang villages such as Lo Manthang, Charang, and Kagbeni. Facilities are simple but comfortable for the region.
